As I sit here looking at snow outdoors in Central Virginia, it seems the perfect day to blog about a sunny late spring outdoor wedding from last year. Anita and Nick were married outdoors at Guildford Farm in Ruckersville, Virginia on June 17, 2017. Anita and Nick chose to get married on the double porch in front of the house and host their reception outdoors under a tent in the back of the house near the barn. Guildford Farms is a family-owned and operated home-turned-wedding venue, and I certainly felt the personal touches from the owners all day on the wedding day. The owner’s daughter-in-law was the wedding photographer, the owner’s son was the groundskeeper, and the owners themselves were very hands-on to make sure that Anita and Nick’s vision came to life at their home. The bride and groom were very family-oriented themselves; I think they selected the perfect venue to echo and illustrate their values.
I loved working with Anita and Nick because they were very authentic. Anita made decisions with resolution—she wanted her wedding to be a unique and honest reflection of her and Nick. She did not have any bridesmaids: Anita and Nick stood alone in front of their friends, family and God. She did not have live flowers and opted for sola wood florals (which are beautiful, unique and very eco-friendly!). Anita and Nick placed a priority on their food and atmosphere, selecting Harvest Moon Catering for their caterer and MS Events for their rental items. Much of their décor was DIY like the signage in the barn, lanterns lining the aisle and votive candle centerpieces. Even their dessert was DIY: the groom’s aunts incorporated their family recipes by baking dozens of cookies for the nearly 200 guests.
I love their wedding video, captured by Ian’s Creations!

My clients often ask me to share stories of when things go wrong at weddings, so I’m going to share a couple behind-the-scenes stories from this spring outdoor wedding. I got stung by a bee while setting up signs in the barn! The Harvest Moon staff saved me by breaking apart a cigarette and using the tobacco to reduce the redness and swelling. And it was HOT on Anita and Nick’s wedding day. We were worried about rain because it had rained all week leading up to their wedding, but it was the heat that drained the set-up crew. Fortunately by the time the guests arrived for the 5 pm ceremony, it had cooled off enough for them to be comfortable. I doubt Anita and Nick knew how challenging it was for their set-up crew (myself included!), and that’s exactly as it should be. They were able to enjoy their friends, family and each other as they began their lives together as Mr. and Mrs.
Thank you to the following fabulous team of vendors for all their hard work!
